Rishabh Pant emerged as the costliest bought player in the IPL history at the recent mega auction held by Lucknow Super Giants for 27 crores (£2.54 million).
The India wicketkeeper, 27, sparked a bidding battle between his new franchise Super Giants and his former side Delhi Capitals.
Pant, who missed the last IPL after a car accident which took 14 months for him to recover, broke the record that was set earlier today by Shreyas Iyer when Punjab Kings bought him for 26.75 crores INR (£2.51 million).
Before the auction, Australian seamer Mitchell Starc had been the costliest player at 11.75 crore by the Capitals for a relatively leaner purse than his 24.75 crore by Kolkata Knight Riders last year.
The first set of players to go under the hammer in Jeddah was only 27-year-old Jos Buttler, England’s white-ball captain and wicketkeeper, who has been bought by the Gujarat Titans for 15.75 crore (£1.4m).
Left-arm seamer Jofra Archer who was excluded from the list of retained and released players initially but was included later, will be back at Rajasthan Royals where he was the player of the tournament in the 2020-21 season for the price tag of 12.5 crore (£1.18m).
After Liam Livingstone, the next player was bought in this round from the second string team in which Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him for 8.75 crore (£796,000) and was followed by Phil Salt for 11.5 crore (£1m) as an opener.
Delhi Capitals retained Harry Brook for 6.25 crore which is equivalent to £590,000.
Brook had been signed by the Capitals after being selected in the mini-auction held in December but pulled out of the 2024 IPL due to his grandmother’s demise.
They also signed Australian batter Jake Fraser-McGurk who scored four fifties for them last season for 9 crore (£850,000).
Punjab Kings who are led by Ricky Ponting were keen on Aussie players, getting Glenn Maxwell for 4.2 crore (£390,000) and Marcus Stoinis for 11 crore (£1.03m).
More somewhere else all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin went back to Chennai Super Kings for 9.75 crore (£927,000) where he wanted to spend time from 2008-2015.
New Zealand’s Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra were bought by CSK, owned by former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, for six hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars and four crores respectively.
Other prominent Indian players who got the deals included K L Rahul who joined the Delhi capitals for 14 crores (£1.35 million) and Mohammed Siraj to Gujarat Titans for Ó12.25 crores (£1.15 million).
Venkatesh Iyer had an especially good year, with 23.75 crore (£2.1m) reported to have been pocketed by him.
England’s Jonny Bairstow and ex-Australia opener David Warner are also among the notable players who went without bidding, although the franchises can still sign them later.
Ten franchises signed 72 new players on Sunday and there are up to 132 opportunities to be filled.
The second half of the auction will begin on Monday and will be compressed with teams submitting lists of players they want at night.
James Anderson, Ben Duckett, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, Wil Jacks and Gus Atkinson are some of the Eng players who are yet to secure deals.
